News portals and aggregators

A news portal sits between a newsroom and an aggregator: it carries some original reporting, but much of the page is syndicated material chosen and arranged by editors. In many countries — particularly where mobile access arrived before a mature print market — the portal, not the newspaper, is where most people actually read the news.

On a portal the editorial signal is in the ordering and in which syndicated stories are promoted next to the original reporting. Read one beside a single-newsroom title from the same country and the difference in what each chooses to carry is immediate: the portal is optimising a whole page of other people's journalism, and what it elevates says as much as anything it writes itself.
