News agencies and wire services

A news agency does not primarily publish to readers — it sells copy to the outlets that do. Its wire is written to be usable by a left-leaning paper and a right-leaning one on the same morning, which forces a plainer register than either would choose alone. A large share of what appears on any front page began as agency copy that a newsroom then cut, headlined and placed.

This makes agencies the most useful control in any comparison. Read the wire account of an event first, then read how two partisan titles headlined the same story: what each newsroom added, removed or promoted becomes visible by subtraction. It is the cleanest way to separate the facts of a story from the framing around it, and it is the exercise most media-literacy teaching is built on.
